MI Healthy Mind
If you’re driving through the northern suburbs, look for AIHFS’ Keith Dayson up on the billboards at I-75, south of 13 mile rd. and another at I-275 near Plymouth rd! Be sure to catch the show they are promoting which is MI Healthy Mind, this Sunday at 12 noon on channel 20. Besides Keith being on the show, it will also feature from AIHFS, Ashley Tuomi and Glenn Wilson. From our Traditional Teachers Advisory Council, look for Jerry Cleland.

Community Lodge
In the evening of Dec. 16, Friday, we will be having a community sweat lodge. The conductor will be Tony Davis of the Little Traverse Bay Band of Odawa Indians. Fire & Teachings start around 5pm. We will go in around 7pm. Please remember these times are approximate. Women should bring a long comfortable skirt, modest comfortable top (such as a t-shirt) and a towel. Men should bring shorts and a towel. If you would like to bring a dish to share for the small feast afterwards, please do! For more info, please contact Nickole Fox or Keith Dayson, 313-846-6030.

 

Coat Giveaway
Sunday, Dec 18, Leaders Advancing and Helping Communities (LAHC), in partnership with Midwest Recycling, will be giving away coats (gently used, first come, first served) to income eligible families. The event will take place at the LAHC community center located at: 4337 Maple St. in Dearborn.

Winter Accessory Giveaway
Wednesday, Dec. 21st, residents of Oakland, Wayne and Macomb counties can stop by the Southfield Parks and Recreation Building to receive a winter hat, a pair of winter gloves, a pair of socks and one headband.

Winter Solstice
Wednesday, Dec. 21st, we will be having our annual winter solstice celebration at the University of Michigan-Dearborn Campus. The address for the University is 4901 Evergreen Rd, Dearborn, MI 48128. The Building info is: University Center, Kochoff Hall, 1133 University Center, Dearborn, Michigan. (once you get on campus you can look for signs to the University Center/Kochoff Hall)
This year’s feast will feature foods grown in the AIHFS garden. There will also be a giveaway. Everyone is welcome to bring a new, homemade or gently used item to contribute! Donations are welcome to help cover event. Please bring your feast bundles! (plate, bowl, cup, utensils)

URBAN ROOTS 2017
Urban Roots is a nine-week course, beginning February 4th, designed to support community leaders in establishing or expanding thriving community gardens in the city.  Applications are due January 20th! Since 2005, nearly 400 community leaders have participated in Urban Roots, building their skills as growers, organizers and using this experience to establish and maintain thriving urban gardens and farms in the city. Winter Solstice Celebration

Community Advisory Council

Healthy Start Playgroup
Parents and young children are welcome to join us for our December playgroup on Friday, December 18, from 11am-1:30pm. We will be making holiday dough ornaments, eating special holiday-themed healthy snacks, having our parent talking circle, and of course playing! Please call the Healthy Start office for more information.

Community Sweat Lodge

MSU Powwow Logo Contest
The North American Indigenous Student Organization of Michigan State University is proud to announce its first logo contest for this year’s 33rd Annual Powwow. This year’s theme will be: Reuniting the Three Fires. Submissions due by December 13th, 2015.

Urban Roots

Lansing Suicide Prevention Training
March 7th, 2016, there will be a one day overview of suicide prevention, intervention and postvention by the Michigan Assn. of Community Mental Health Boards. This training is open to anyone who wishes to learn more about intervening across the suicide spectrum. Professionals from the fields of substance abuse and mental health may all benefit.
