Tribe to Tribe Blues Community Challenge
AIHFS is competing in the 2016 Tribe to Tribe Blues Community Challenge. Starting Saturday, May 7, 2016 and end date for recording is Friday, July 1, 2016. Award celebration at MIFO (Michigan Indian Family Olympics) Friday, July 22, 2016. Keep Growing Detroit (KGD) Newsletter
The May 5th edition of the KGD newsletter is available here as a pdf. KGD exists to promote a food sovereign city where the majority of fruits and vegetables Detroiters consume are grown by residents within the city’s limits.

Free 2 Year Tuition
The city of Detroit has created the “Detroit Promise,” which is a permanent funding source to make sure Detroit students have access to a tuition-free, two-year community college education. Native American Youth Film Institute
July 17th through the 22nd, Michigan State University will be sponsoring a Native American Youth Film Institute. Selected students will receive training and hands-on experience with lighting, sound, storyboarding, shot design, special effects production and many other benefits! Applications are due by May 31st. Climate Justice Film
Thursday, May 26, the Detroit Film Theatre at the DIA will be showing This Changes Everything. The doors will open at 6pm with the film to begin at 7pm. The film is a documentary about climate change and communities around the world who are fighting for clean energy. Transportation to N. Scott Momaday Evening
Thanks to a generous offer from University of Michigan there will be transportation, Friday, March 11, 2016, from AIHFS to Ann Arbor, University of Michigan, Michigan League Ballroom to hear a lecture with a reception for Pulitzer prize-winning novelist, Native American scholar, and poet, N. Scott Momaday. Ghost Supper
Wednesday, November 18, from 5:00 pm to 8:00 pm in the Social Hall. The Systems of Care Grant here at AIHFS will be hosting a traditional Ghost Supper to celebrate the time we’ve had with those we know and love that have walked on. There will be an opening prayer followed by a teaching about Ghost Suppers by Frank Ettawageshik, song and a drum with a sacred fire. A main course will be provided and you can feel free to bring a sampling of your loved one’s favorite dish to pass if you like. The invitation is open to all. Miigwetch.

GONA Training of Facilitators
Coming up November 21st, 22nd, &23rd 2015 at AIHFS, Sacred Bundle will be hosting a GONA [Gathering of Native Americans] Training for facilitators where we will be working together for 3 full days building up our skills and working through the GONA themes of Belonging, Mastery, Interdependence, and Generosity to address the issues facing our community.   GONA is rooted in our cultural values and utilizes humor to promote healing and wellness.  If this sounds interesting to you and you want to REGISTER or if you have any Questions please contact Christy B. Tuesday, October 27, we will have our annual Halloween celebration from 6-8pm. The celebration will be held in our parking lot where vehicle trunks are decorated for family fun, activities and healthy treats.

safeTALK Training
You can learn how to help save a life from suicide by attending the next safeTALK (Suicide Alertness for Everyone) training here at American Indian Health and Family Services. In about three hours, you can learn to recognize people who may be at risk of suicide, how to open up discussion, keep them safe, and refer them to appropriate services. Up to 30 people may enroll for this free training scheduled for 1 – 4 p.m. Friday, November 6, 2015. Help spread the word!  Do you know Native college students or college graduates who are seeking to apply to graduate or professional school? Graduate Horizons is a competitive graduate school admission workshop for Native college students and college graduates. Native One-stop Portal
The official benefits website of the United States, http://www.Benefits.gov, launched a portal of resources for Native American, Alaskan Native, and tribal populations. The portal, Native One-Stop, provides information about the services that are available through the Federal government. Native One-Stop conveniently houses any service that these populations may need with topics ranging from assistance for populations with severe disabilities to congressional internships for Native Americans.

 

Clothing Available
The following 3 Church of Latter Day Saints locations should be able to provide family members with coats, shoes, blankets, and additional clothing. Families should bring their own bag to carry clothes. No vouchers are required on Saturday, but those that go on Friday can say Calvin Modawell’s name and say that they didn’t have time to get a voucher but it should be taken care of.
When: Friday, October 23 (9-5) and Saturday, October 24 (9-12)
Where: 3 Locations at the Church of Latter Day Saints (Roseville is recommended because of way shorter lines)

Preschool U
In a three week series starting Friday, October 9, Healthy Start/Family Spirit is partnering with Detroit Public Television to offer this program. Dream Seekers Youth Program Fall Kickoff and Family Night

October 23-25, will be their 11th annual conference. This year’s theme is “What can we do to bring forth a sustainable global society founded on respect for nature, universal human rights, economic justice and a culture of peace?”

Native American Heritage Day
September 26, across from the Nankin Mills interpretive center, 33175 Ann Arbor Trail, Westland, Mi. from 1-5pm. Join AIHFS as we help celebrate the  75th anniversary of one of our partners, the North American Indian Association, with Native American singing, dancing, craft items and food for sale. The cost is free and should be a great family event.

DMC Grant Press Release
American Indian Health and Family Services (AIHFS) received a grant of $50,650 from The DMC Foundation. The purpose of the grant is to expand the Healing Our Bodies, Healing Ourselves cooking classes and encourage healthier diets and lifestyles.

NAIA Gardening Class
Create an amazing container garden in one day! Register for this free class with MSU’s Alyce Hartman, a master gardener and all around gardening rock star! She has taught food and garden related courses for years, and even ran her own food-related nonprofit in California for 7 years. Healthy Start/Family Spirit is holding our annual Baby Celebration on Wednesday, July 8, from 5:30-7:30. This is a fun event for the whole community including dinner, family-friendly activities, and raffle prizes, to celebrate all of the children and parents who have participated in Healthy Start/Family Spirit this year. Teaching About Mexica Moondance
Friday, July 10, 7:15-9:pm, please help us welcome two ceremonial elders from Mexico, Abuela Jovita Embarcadero Constantino and Maria Elena Diaz Mariaca.  They will be joining us for a teaching to be held here at AIHFS about the Mexica Moondance Ceremony also called la Danza de la Luna. Native Music: Spirits Rising @ The Concert of Colors July 11th
Spirits Rising is the new dynamic musical duo of Native American singers and songwriters Allison Radell (Powhatan) and Joe Reilly (Cherokee). Incorporating elements of jazz, folk, blues, hip-hop, rock, and traditional Native American music, Spirits Rising shares songs from the heart that inspire and uplift. Joe and Allison are thrilled to return to the Concert of Colors and will be joined by Marion Hayden (bass), Gayelynn Mckinney (drums), Mark Stone (percussion), Lesley-Anne Stone (vocals) and traditional Anishnaabe dancers. Mexica Moondance
Beginning Tuesday, July 14 through Sunday, July 19, in Clio, Michigan will be the Danza de la Luna 2015 (Mexica Moondance). Campsites are $10 a night which includes meals.

APHA Scholarship
October 31-November 4, the American Public Health Association (APHA) will have their annual meeting that addresses current and emerging health science, policy, and practice issues in an effort to prevent disease and promote health.  In addition it provides numerous opportunities to learn about public health careers, research careers and to network with American Indian, Alaska Native, Native Hawaiian health professional role models and elders. New Detroit Multicultural Leadership Series
This experience highlights the history, culture and socio-economics of the following communities of color: African American, Arab, Asian, Chaldean, Latino and Native American. The series builds cultural competency and provides a foundation for strengthening cross cultural relationships. New Detroit’s Multicultural Leadership Series is now in its’ 19th year.
Tuition: $1,000, plus $25 for the recognition ceremony.
