Men’s Society &  Women’s Society

Healthy Start Playgroup
Families with young children are invited to join us for our October  playgroup on Friday, October 28, from 11am-1:30pm. We will be doing some fun fall and Halloween-themed activities, and eating spooky snacks! For more information please contact the Healthy Start office, 313-846-6030.

Fall Back Friday
Friday, October 28, we will have a Halloween celebration for 18 to 24 year olds with a DJ and dancing! There will also be a craft, lots of food and Halloween/fall themed snacks! There will be a movie theater in the basement playing Throwback Halloween Movies. We welcome and encourage costumes/Halloween attire. AIHFS Diabetes Classes
Beginning November 3rd you can learn to manage your diabetes by caring for the whole person. This is a 12 week class held here at AIHFS that will cover the ABC’s of Diabetes, blood sugar monitoring, healthy recipe demos and more. Documentary: The Listeners
November 17, please join The Sacred Bundle Youth Suicide Prevention Project and Common Ground Crisis Center for an exclusive screening at Cinema Detroit of a new documentary, The Listeners. Follow the paths, training, and experiences of people who volunteer to answer calls to suicide hotlines.

Joe Reilly on Local 4
Joe Reilly, who works with our Dream Seekers youth program here at AIHFS, had an opportunity to appear on Music Monday at Local 4, WDIV. Holiday Meal Wish List
Holidays are a time of family, food and generosity. Some of the families that use our services could use help with their holiday meal. To help them out we have created a holiday meal wish list. We are looking for donations of canned foods and other non-perishable items, like stove-top stuffing, mashed potato flakes, and French’s fried onions. Needs Assessment
October 20th, 5:30-8:00pm, our community advisory council will have a MSU Extension and AgBioResearch State-wide needs assessment.  This is open to the community. The Circle is not your ordinary children’s music album. It uses fun and creative songs to teach children about diversity and social and environmental justice, while inspiring families to engage in conversations about America’s core democratic values. Free Movie Night
November 16, join us at the MSU center at 3408 Woodward in Detroit for a viewing of 2 films featuring Native American themes. One is called Unnatural Causes and the other is Eriel Deranger – Reclaiming our Indigeneity and our place in modern society.

A main course will be provided and you can feel free to bring a sampling of your loved one’s favorite dish to pass if you like. The invitation is open to all. Miigwetch.

GONA Training of Facilitators
Coming up November 21st, 22nd, &23rd 2015 at AIHFS, Sacred Bundle will be hosting a GONA [Gathering of Native Americans] Training for facilitators where we will be working together for 3 full days building up our skills and working through the GONA themes of Belonging, Mastery, Interdependence, and Generosity to address the issues facing our community.   GONA is rooted in our cultural values and utilizes humor to promote healing and wellness.  If this sounds interesting to you and you want to REGISTER or if you have any Questions please contact Christy B. December 12, at the N’Amerind Friendship Centre in London, Ontario. They will have authentic Native Hand-made crafts with fundraising proceeds going to United Way for the community liaison program.

Tuesday, October 27, we will have our annual Halloween celebration from 6-8pm. The celebration will be held in our parking lot where vehicle trunks are decorated for family fun, activities and healthy treats.

safeTALK Training
You can learn how to help save a life from suicide by attending the next safeTALK (Suicide Alertness for Everyone) training here at American Indian Health and Family Services. In about three hours, you can learn to recognize people who may be at risk of suicide, how to open up discussion, keep them safe, and refer them to appropriate services. Up to 30 people may enroll for this free training scheduled for 1 – 4 p.m. Friday, November 6, 2015. U of M Graduate Horizons
Help spread the word!  Do you know Native college students or college graduates who are seeking to apply to graduate or professional school? Graduate Horizons is a competitive graduate school admission workshop for Native college students and college graduates. Native One-stop Portal
The official benefits website of the United States, http://www.Benefits.gov, launched a portal of resources for Native American, Alaskan Native, and tribal populations. The portal, Native One-Stop, provides information about the services that are available through the Federal government. Native One-Stop conveniently houses any service that these populations may need with topics ranging from assistance for populations with severe disabilities to congressional internships for Native Americans.

 

Clothing Available
The following 3 Church of Latter Day Saints locations should be able to provide family members with coats, shoes, blankets, and additional clothing. Families should bring their own bag to carry clothes. No vouchers are required on Saturday, but those that go on Friday can say Calvin Modawell’s name and say that they didn’t have time to get a voucher but it should be taken care of.
When: Friday, October 23 (9-5) and Saturday, October 24 (9-12)
Where: 3 Locations at the Church of Latter Day Saints (Roseville is recommended because of way shorter lines)
