Digital Storytelling Workshop
June 8th through the 10th, the Sacred Bundle invites you to share your Hope and Wellness story. We are looking for 10 individuals that would like to learn the digital story process and come away with a beautiful product of their own to share with our community. Join us Friday June 8th, 6-8pm for the kick off to what is sure to be a therapeutic weekend full of listening, learning and sharing. Community Lodge
Saturday, June 9th, we are having a community sweat lodge here at AIHFS, 4880 Lawndale, Detroit. The conductor will be Tony Davis of the Little Traverse Bay Band of Odawa Indians. Fire & Teachings start around 4pm. We will go in around 6pm. Please remember these times are approximate. Women should bring a long comfortable skirt, modest comfortable top (such as a t-shirt) and a towel. Men should bring shorts and a towel. If you would like to bring a dish to share for the small feast afterwards, please do! For more info, 313-846-3718.

Well Woman Exam Webinar
June 11th at 1:30pm CST sponsored by the American Indian Cancer Foundation. This 15-minute webinar entitled De-mystifying the Well Woman Exam: What are you doing down there?! will be hosted by Dr. Amanda Bruegl. Dr. Bruegl (Oneida and Stockbridge-Munsee) is a Gynecologic Oncologist at the Oregon Health and Science University. The audience for this webinar is community members, patients, and anyone who would benefit from learning about how to talk to patients about a Well Woman Visit.

Substance Use Disorder Conference
The registration link is now available for the Wellness Beyond the Walls Conference on July 19th!  This is the Detroit Wayne Mental Health Authority’s Faith Based Community committee that coordinates this event.  It’s always a good one each year. We encourage our community members to attend. This also includes Continuing Education for those who need to get those hours in.  This conference is FREE and includes lunch! Dream Seekers Summer Day Camp Registration Open House
Wednesday June 6th, 2018, 5-7pm at AIHFS. Parents and guardians must attend the registration open house to register their youth for summer programs. Summer programs will include cultural activities, trips, traditional teachings, games, crafts, and more!
Camp Schedule is 10am-3pm. Ages 12-17: July 9th-12th, ages 8-11: July 16th-19th, ages 8-17: July 23rd-26th, ages 5-7: August 20th-23rd.

Thursday Farm Stand
Beginning June 7th, the 1st and 3rd Thursday of each month, from 3pm to 5pm, we will have Eastern Market’s farm stand where you can purchase fresh, locally grown food using cash, credit/debit, WIC, Bridge Card, Double-Up Food Bucks, Project Fresh, or Senior Fresh coupons. AIHFS Receives CDC Wellness Grant
American Indian Health & Family Services (AIHFS) has received a 3-year grant from the Center for Disease Control to fund a project to identify and implement cultural wellness practices. The Tribal Practices for Wellness in Indian Country grant will support traditional practices that build connections to community, family, and culture—which have been shown to reduce risk for chronic disease among American Indians and Alaska Natives. Bottle Drive
The Tribal Youth M.O.V.E. Group at AIHFS is currently collecting donations of cans and bottles. The group is trying to raise funds to recruit new members as well as for traveling expenses to different Native conferences throughout the year. Men’s Health Community Dialogue
Saturday, June 2nd, 9:30am to 2:30pm, at Henry Ford Hospital, 2799 W. Grand Blvd., Detroit, be part of a listening session sponsored by the Office of Minority Health at the U.S. Dept. of Health and Human Services. This is one of many being held across the country.

Dream Seekers Youth Digital Storytelling

Tomorrow, August 19th, we will be hosting a Dream Seekers Youth Digital Storytelling Premiere from 6-8pm in the AIHFS Social Hall. This will give our youth who participated in the summer program an opportunity to share the digital stories they created. Please come and support them with your presence.

Community Advisory Council
Thursday, August 20, 5:30-7:30pm, we will be having our monthly community advisory council meeting. This month we will have a representative from the Veteran’s Administration, Charles Lawrence. One of the talking points will be: Is the VA meeting the spiritual needs of Native Americans. Everyone is welcome to attend. For more info, John Marcus, 313-846-6030.

American Indian Diabetes Summit

Native American Heritage Day
September 26, across from the Nankin Mills interpretive center, 33175 Ann Arbor Trail, Westland, Mi. from 1-5pm. Join AIHFS as we help celebrate the  75th anniversary of one of our partners, the North American Indian Association, with Native American singing, dancing, craft items and food for sale. The cost is free and should be a great family event.

World Suicide Prevention Day
Join us For World Suicide Prevention Day!

We will be having BBQ, Traditional crafts, Visual Arts- pop up mural painting, Open Mic [special poetry sharing from Youth United & Awkward Theory will be performing!].  We will also be breaking down stigma through activities with Youth United.  Use our Hashtags for the event #WSPD2015 and #HealingHelpers

In honor of National Breastfeeding month, Healthy Start will be hosting a Breastfeeding Brunch on August 14 at 11am. All families are welcome. We will have a light brunch and activities for the whole family. You do not have to be breastfeeding to attend.
