Community Advisory Council
Thursday, July 20, 5:30pm-7:30pm, we will have Grace Schmitz, from the Great Lakes Inter-Tribal Epidemiology Center. She is returning to share findings from a series of interviews she did in our community previously around tobacco. Everyone is welcome! For more info call me, John Marcus, at 313-846-3718.
Community Sweat Lodge
Sunday, July 23, we will be having a community sweat lodge here at AIHFS, 4880 Lawndale, Detroit. The conductor will be Tony Davis of the Little Traverse Bay Band of Odawa Indians. Fire & Teachings start around 2pm. We will go in around 4pm. Please remember these times are approximate. Women should bring a long comfortable skirt, modest comfortable top (such as a t-shirt) and a towel. Men should bring shorts and a towel. If you would like to bring a dish to share for the small feast afterwards, please do! If you would like to bring cedar, wood, grandfather rocks, or strawberries, for the ceremony; or, for more info, please contact Nickole Fox, 313-846-3718.
Know Your Rights Workshop
Healthy Start at AIHFS hosts Michigan United on Friday, July 28th from 11am-1:30pm for a workshop that teaches how you can help your family or others in your community become aware of their legal rights when it comes to being of undocumented immigration status. Learn about ways to respond and take action in the face of potential detention or deportation. Lunch and childcare will be provided. This workshop will be lead in Spanish with English and Arabic interpretation available. For more information please contact the Healthy Start office at (313) 846-6030 extension 1300.
Community Cooking Series
Beginning August 3rd AIHFS will have a weekly community interactive cooking lesson using healthy recipes and traditional Native American foods. Participants at least 8 years of age & up will get a gift card for each session they complete.
Wellness Walk 2017
Join us for a one mile Wellness Walk before the pow wow on August 19th at 10:00am. It’s a great way to wake up your body and mind, view our new gardens, and to have fun with old and new friends! There is no need to pre-register but the first 50 attendees will be eligible for a free t-shirt. We hope to see you there!
AISES 2017 National Conference ASSIST Travel Scholarship
With funding from the National Science Foundation, the American Indian Science and Engineering Society (AISES) is able to bring up to 40 PhD students, post-doc professionals, and early-career faculty in Engineering to the 2017 AISES National Conference for professional development workshops, cultural activities, and networking.
The AISES conference will be September 21st through the 23rd in Denver, Colorado. This travel scholarship will cover expenses incurred traveling to and attending the AISES Conference up to $2,000.
