Seventh Fire Food Sovereignty Alliance
Join us today, April 18^th, at 5:30pm for our next Food Sovereignty Alliance meeting. This group increases community voice, ownership, and action in the Sacred Roots traditional food program. This month we will begin planning our digital storytelling workshop that will take place this winter. Everyone is welcome at our meetings. Community Advisory Council Meeting
Thursday, April 20^th, 5:30-7:30, is our monthly community advisory council meeting. This month we will have a presentation by Mothering Justice. Mothering Justice is dedicated to empowering mothers to influence policy on behalf of themselves and their families. Mothering Justice hopes to change the future of families in Michigan for the better. For more info call me, John Marcus, 313-846-6030.

 

Healthy Start Playgroup
Families with young children are invited to join us for our April playgroup on Friday, April 21 from 11am-1:30pm. This month our special guest, WIC intern Elena Flores, will be teaching us about easy, nutritious, kid-friendly snacks to make with WIC foods.  For more information please contact the Healthy Start office.

Long ago, the shells from the sea, porcupine quills, elks teeth, bone, bear claws, turtle shells and even dear hooves were used to make beautiful beadwork that accentuated dancers as they moved, beadwork that highlighted the accomplishments of tribal members, and even beadwork to mark milestones in life. Earth Day Celebration and Cleanup
Saturday, April 22^nd, we are breaking ground on our new garden space— join us as we celebrate springtime, build community, and honor our Mother Earth. Meet @ AIHFS at noon and we will walk together to Romanowksi Park. Please bring gloves, trash bags, shovel, garden hoe, or wheelbarrow if you can. Department Name Change
We wanted to send a big Miigwetch/Wado/Thank you to all who participated in the surveys and feedback over the last few months to help AIHFS decide a new name for one of our departments.  We got feedback from all of the staff at AIHFS, community advisory council, youth advisory council and took additional surveys at an event. Overall, over 75 people contributed to this process! The department that includes programs such as our healthy start, youth programs, physical activity, healthy foods initiatives and suicide prevention is now called “Community Wellness.”

 

Wayne State University VEOP
The Wayne State University Veteran’s Educational Opportunities Program is a Veteran’s Upward Bound project with the primary mission of providing instruction in study skills, grammar/literature, math, writing, foreign language, science, and basic computer skills necessary for success beyond high school.

 

 

Women Organize Michigan Summit
On April 23rd at Cobo Hall there will be a Women Organize Michigan Detroit Summit, which is focused on women and the economy. This event has an impressive lineup of speakers, organizational sponsors, and women owned business support. It’s important that women from all walks of life not only participate, but help to plan this event if they are interested. There are panels and workshops that could use you and AIHFS members’ ideas!

American Indian Festival
Saturday, April 29th, American Indian Communities Leadership Council will be presenting American Indian Festival in Algonac Mi. This is open to the public and there will be powwow dancing, American Indian Crafts, and a food sale.
