Announcements of December 16th

 

Community Lodge
In the evening of Dec. 16, Friday, we will be having a community sweat lodge here at AIHFS, 4880 Lawndale, Detroit. The conductor will be Tony Davis of the Little Traverse Bay Band of Odawa Indians. Fire & Teachings start around 5pm. We will go in around 7pm. Please remember these times are approximate. Women should bring a long comfortable skirt, modest comfortable top (such as a t-shirt) and a towel. Men should bring shorts and a towel. Rebroadcast of AIHFS on MI Healthy Mind
If you missed AIHFS being spotlighted on MI Healthy Mind, this past Sunday on channel 20, they are going to rebroadcast it again this Sunday, the 18th, at noon. They said they are doing this, in part, due to a great response! Besides Ashley Tuomi, Glenn Wilson and Keith Dayson being featured, look for community elder, Jerry Cleland as part of the broadcast.

 

Winter Solstice
Wednesday, Dec. 21st, we will be having our annual winter solstice celebration at the University of Michigan-Dearborn Campus. The address for the University is 4901 Evergreen Rd, Dearborn, MI 48128. The Building info is: University Center, Kochoff Hall, 1133 University Center, Dearborn, Michigan. (once you get on campus you can look for signs to the University Center/Kochoff Hall)
This year’s feast will feature foods grown in the AIHFS garden. There will also be a giveaway. Everyone is welcome to bring a new, homemade or gently used item to contribute! Donations are welcome to help cover event. Please bring your feast bundles! (plate, bowl, cup, utensils)

Potential Job Opportunities
AIHFS has a SAMHSA grant to implement services and become an active member of the Detroit Wayne System of Care (SOC).  The SOC is seeking both Parent and Youth Peer Support Partners to work with Native American consumers. Parent Support Partners must be a parent with first-hand experience navigating public child serving agencies and raising a child with a mental health or developmental challenge. Youth Peer Support Partners are age 15 – 25 and must have “lived experience” which simply means having received mental health services as a youth. Upon receiving training these positions may be part or full-time and start at around $13/ hour.  If interested, please contact Bob Davis at AIHFS – 313 846-6030.

 

Tobacco Cessation
The American Cancer Society has a group-based tobacco cessation counseling program called Freshstart. The program is designed to help participants stop smoking by providing essential information, skills for coping with cravings and group support.

Women’s Lodge
Friday, January 6th, Bea Jackson will be joining us to share teachings and conduct a women’s sweat lodge.  All women are welcome and men who are interested in helping with the fire.  The fire & teachings start at 5pm. World Sabbath Day
The 18th Annual World Sabbath will be held at Temple Beth El in Bloomfield Hills on Sunday, March 5th, 2017, officially beginning at 4:00 PM.  This is an interfaith experience of music, dance and prayer: seeking to build a world of tolerance, justice, faithfulness and peace.
